Charles Portman was the son of Charles Edward and Annie Portman, of Tipton, Staffordshire; husband of B Portman, of Tipton, he enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Sergeant Portman successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to 4 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery and took part in operation Overlord (Normandy).
L/Sgt Portman was killed in action on 6 July 1944, age 28, and was buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
