Corporal Henry W Pitt

Henry William Pitt was the son of Henry and Agnes May Pitt; husband of Margaret Therese Pitt, of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

His younger brother, Sgt James A Pitt, No. 1578317 served with the RAFVR and was killed on 24 August 1943 and is commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial.

Corporal Pitt successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 70 from 28 June to 9 July 1943. His course report stated “Good grasp of work, a little nervous but no hesitation.” He was posted to 6th Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals and took part in operation Overlord (Normandy).

Cpl Pitt was killed in action on 19 August 1944, age 24, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
