Private Clifford M Oxtoby

Clifford Melbourne Oxtoby was the son of Police Constable Charles Clifford and Adell Oxtoby, of Scarborough Bluffs, Ontario, Canada. His brother served in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was 5’ 10”, 150 lbs, medium complexion, Blue eyes, Brown hair and with 20/20 vision. He enlisted on 2 November 1942 in 2 District Depot, Infantry “R” Wing 4 Company.

He arrived in the UK on 9 April 1943, and qualified as a parachutist with 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion at Airborne Depot and School on 28 February 1944 and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Private Oxtoby and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion jumped into France on 5/6 June 1944.

He was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial at St Vaast en Auge and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 6 September 1945.
