Eric Lightowler was the son of Albert and Edith Lightowler, of Moldgreen, Huddersfield. He enlisted in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (The West Riding) and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Lightowler successfully completed glider pilot training and was posted to 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Sgt Lightowler was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 24, and was given a field burial near Villers-sur-Mer and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 5 October 1945.
