David Adrian White was the son of David Robinson and Laura White, of Hull. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Staff Sergeant White successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted to C Squadron, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in the first lift, Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
S/Sgt White was killed in action when his Hamilcar glider, Chalk number 318, turned over after landing, on Landing Zone ‘Z’, SE of the Boshoeve near Wolfheze, trapping both pilots under the Morris tractor and the 17 pounder Anti-Tank gun load. Sgt Winkworth was killed instantly and although Staff Sergeant White survived the landing he later died of his wounds, on 17 September 1944, aged 22, and was given a field burial in a mass grave near the Schoonoord Hotel. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 13 August 1945.
