Lieutenant Harry Whittaker

Harry Whittaker was the son of Harry and Margaret Whittaker and the husband of Edna Whittaker, of New Moston, Manchester. He was commissioned in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lieutenant Whittaker successfully completed his glider training and was posted to HQ Troop, 1 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Lt Whittaker is known to have been in the Rhine Bridge area at Arnhem. He died of wounds, aged 28, in the St Joseph Psychiatric Hospital at Apeldoorn on 20 September 1944, and was given a field burial in the adjacent cemetery. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 2 October 1945.
