Private James Vernon

James Vernon was the son of David and Mary Vernon and the husband of Patricia Vernon, of Creetown, Kirkcudbrightshire. He enlisted in the The King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Vernon successfully completed his glider training and was posted to D Company, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Vernon was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 26, and was given a field burial north of the railway crossing at Wolfheze, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
