Emrys James Thomas A.F.C. was the son of William and Margaret Thomas, of Cardiff; nephew of David Duncan Evans, of Cardiff. He was commissioned in the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) and volunteered for airborne forces.
Captain Thomas successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to F Squadron, 15 Flight as Officer Commanding, 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Capt Thomas was killed in action on 22 September 1944, aged 28, and was given a field burial in front of the Tafelberg Hotel, Oosterbeek, and re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 3 September 1945.
