Richard Kenneth Shaw was the son of Matthew and Gertrude Shaw, of Leek, Staffordshire. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Shaw successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 108, from 20 to 29 March 1944, was posted to 1 Section, 16 Parachute Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Shaw was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 24, and was given a field burial in an isolated grave at Klingelbeekseweg, south of Oosterbeek church, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 27 May 1946.
