Reginald Herbert Saunders was the son of Herbert and Elsie Saunders and the husband of Doreen Saunders. He enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Staff Sergeant Saunders successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to C Squadron, 2nd Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
S/Sgt Saunders was killed in action on 26 September 1944, aged 23. His remains were found in the harbour of the Van Gelder Zonen paper mill at Renkum on 5 June 1945 and were buried in the local Onder de Bomen General Cemetery, Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 22 August 1945.
