Private George Saunby

20 Sep 1944

George Saunby was the son of Joshua and Margaret Saunby, of Skinningrove, Yorkshire. He enlisted in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Pte Saunby successfully completed his glider training and was posted to C Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Saunby was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 28, and was given a field burial in in the grounds of the Psychiatric Hospital at Wolfheze, Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
