George Chisholme was the son James and Margaret Chisholme, of Primrose Hill, Lancaster. He enlisted in the King’s Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster), transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Chisholme successfully completed Air Despatcher training and was posted to 223 Air Despatch Company, Royal Army Service Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Cpl Chisholme was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 26, when RAF 271 Squadron Dakota KG-444, base Down Ampney was shot down by a German FW 190, and crashed near the house of Mr J Van Berlo at Oploo, on the road to Gemert. Three of the four Air Despatchers were killed, and Mr Van Berlo buried them in front of his house. They were re-interred to the Overloon War Cemetery on 28 May 1947.
