Robert Winter Crooks was the son of James and Phyllis Crooks, of Glasgow. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.
Driver Crooks successfully completed Air Despatcher training and was posted to 800 Air Despatch Company, Royal Army Service Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Dvr Crooks was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 32, when RAF 233 Squadron Dakota KG-566, base Blakehill Farm, was shot down by German fighters and crashed near the ‘Sans Souci’ farm on Zwaanstraat, Eindhoven. There were no survivors, the pilot is still missing in action but the other members of the crew, including the four Air Despatchers, are buried in the Eindhoven (Woensel) General Cemetery.
