Sergeant Russell D Greenhalgh

Russell Duckworth Greenhalgh was born in Burnley and lived in Lancashire. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Greenhalgh successfully completed his glider training, and was attached to HQ Airborne Troops and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Greenhalgh was researched by Mr Joop Thuring from Heesch who concluded that he was on board a glider that made an emergency landing near Dongen. He was mortally wounded by German fire after the landing and died on 17 September 1944, aged 29, whilst on his way to a Tilburg hospital (Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011). He is buried in Tilburg (Gilzerbaan) General Cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.
