Joseph Tate was the son of Joseph and Beatrice Tate, of Whickham, County Durham. He was commissioned in the Durham Light Infantry.
Lieutenant Tate successfully completed his glider training, and was attached to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Tate is known to have been taken by the Germans to Rhenen, being a wounded POW. He died there, aged 26, on 22 September 1944, and was given a field burial in the German Military Cemetery on Grebbeberg, east of Rhenen and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery prior to 28 January 1946.
