William signed up to the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders aged just 17 (lied about his age), before the outbreak of WWII in 1939.
He saw action in North Africa (El Alamein) in the 51 (Highland) Reconnaissance Regiment.
Then 14 Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, followed by Gordon Highlanders.
