John Collie was born and lived in Kincardineshire he enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders, transferred to the Army Physical Training Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Collie successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Kabrit, Egypt, and was attached to 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Collie was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 23, and given a field burial east of Ginkel Heath. His grave was found by a forester on 22 January 1947 and re-interred to Jonkerbus War Cemetery, at Nijmegen, on 22 May 1947. (Roll of Honour, 5th Edition, 2011).
