Sergeant Carl A Scott

On 17 September 1944 Jedburgh team ‘Claude’ was dropped by parachute near Wolfheze. It consisted of Dutch Captain Jacobus Groenewoud and Americans Lt Harvey Todd and Technical Sergeant Carl Scott. Groenewoud and Todd reached the Rhine Bridge at Arnhem. Scott could not locate his radio set on the Landing Zone, and subsequently helped to defend the Oosterbeek perimeter.

Tech Sgt Scott was last seen in the Oosterbeek perimeter on 22 September 1944. After the war his grave was found in the front garden of the manager of the ‘De Blauwe Kamer’ brickworks near the Opheusden ferry on the northern bank of the Rhine at Wageningen. It is likely that he drowned in the Rhine during the withdrawal from Oosterbeek on 25/26 September 1944, but it cannot be excluded that he tried to swim the river on another date. In 1945 he was re-interred in the Ardennes American Cemetery at Neuville-en-Condroz in Belgium, and sometime around 1949 he was given a permanent resting place in the Rockland cemetery (Washington County, Ohio) in the USA.
