Jedburgh team ‘Claude’
On 17 September 1944 Jedburgh team ‘Claude’ was dropped by parachute near Wolfheze. It consisted of Dutch Captain Jacobus Groenewoud and Americans Lt Harvey Todd and Technical Sergeant Carl Scott. Groenewoud and Todd reached the Rhine Bridge at Arnhem. Scott could not locate his radio set on the Landing Zone, and subsequently helped to defend the Oosterbeek perimeter.
Capt Groenewoud’s task was to contact the local resistance movement. He was killed in action on 18 September by a German sniper, aged 27, as he tried to reach a house in the Arnhem Rhine Bridge area and is buried in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
