Eric Arthur Samwells was the son of William and Charlotte Samwells, of East Acton, Middlesex. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Leading Aircraftman Samwells was a member of 6341 Light Warning Unit, Radar Detachment, Royal Air Force. He was given some glider training and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
LAC Samwells was killed in action on 22 September 1944, aged 21, and was given a field burial at the edge of a ploughed field on the Hoog Oorsprong estate, west of Van Borsselenweg, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 15 October 1945.
