John George Llewelyn Williams was the son of John and Elizabeth Williams of Herne Hill, London. He enlisted in The Queen’s Royal Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Williams successfully completed glider training and was posted to 181 Airlanding Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Williams died on 21 March 1945, aged 36. He belonged to the British medical staff in the William III Barracks at Apeldoorn until he was sent to Germany by train on 18 October 1944. In March 1945 he was listed as a POW in Stalag XIIA. He may have been a casualty of a forced march when his camp was evacuated in the face of the advancing Russians. (Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the Missing.
