John Gilbert Burge was born in Middlesex and lived in South East London. He enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Burge successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and also Glider Pilot training and was posted to C Squadron, The Glider Pilot Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem) in the first lift, Chalk number 379, from Tarrant Rushton, in a Horsa Glider towed by a Halifax.
Sgt Burge was killed in action, aged 25, on 25 to 26 September 1944. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
