Staff Sergeant Alfred Bell

Alfred Bell was the son of Richard and Margaret Bell and the husband of Mona Bell, of Selly Oak, Birmingham. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Staff/Sergeant Bell successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted to E Squadron, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

S/Sgt Bell is presumed to have drowned in the Rhine on 25/26 September 1944, aged 32. His body was recovered from the river Lek near Tull en ‘t Waal on 25 February 1945. He and Pte Thomas Beckett have a joint grave. They were buried in coffins one above the other in a single grave space in the Protestant Cemetery at Tull en ‘t Waal (Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011).
