Norman Vere Maxwell Adams was the son of Dr. Daniel Adams and Edith Adams and the husband of Hilda Adams, of Hunstanton, Norfolk. He was granted a commission in the Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey), and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Adams successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted as a section commander to D Squadron, 13 Flight, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in the second lift, Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Adam’s Horsa glider, Chalk number 457, carrying elements of 1 Forward Observation Unit and 1 Airlanding Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, took off from RAF Keevil, towed by a Stirling and heading for Landing Zone ‘Z’ at Wolfheze. The glider ditched in the sea off the coast of England. All of the crew with the sole exception of Lt Adams were saved. Lt Adams died on 18 September 1944, aged 27, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
