Sergeant Arthur J Newman

Arthur James Newman was the son of Frederick and Grace Newman and the husband of Annie Newman, of Forest Hill, London. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Sergeant Newman successfully completed glider training and parachute training at RAF Ringway. He was posted to 1 Airlanding Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Newman was seriously wounded operating as no. 1 of his gun, and was taken prisoner. He was repatriated to Seacroft Hospital at Leeds (West Yorkshire) but died on 11 May 1945, aged 29, whilst undergoing an operation associated with his wounds.
