Bernard Holden was the son of Albert and Elizabeth Holden, of Preston and the husband of Mary Holden. He enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Lance Bombardier Holden successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1 Airlanding Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Bdr Holden died of acute pancreatitis (probably due to some kind of abdominal wound which damaged the pancreas) and a secondary infection in the abdomen associated with ascites (the build up of fluid) in the 67th United States Hospital, Musgrove Park, Taunton (Somerset) (Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011). He died on 18 October 1944, aged 30, and is buried in Preston (New Hall Lane) Cemetery.
