William Nutley served with the Royal Armoured Corps as a sergeant prior to volunteering for airborne forces during World War II.
He qualified as a military parachutist on course 88 which ran at RAF Ringway in October 1943, after completing ground training at Hardwick Hall. The course instructors' notes from Ringway record that he was "cheerful and intelligent, excellent stick jumper."
After qualifying he was posted to the 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Battalion and initially served with 3 Platoon A Coy.
