Pte Herbert Buckley enlisted into The South Staffordshire Regiment and later volunteered for service with The Parachute Regiment during World War II.
After attending preparatory training at Hardwick Hall he transferred to RAF Ringway for parachute training on Course 60 which ran from 12 to 29 April 1943. The course instructors' notes record that he was "a very good performer in every respect."
After qualifying as a military parachutist he was posted to the 3rd Parachute Battalion as a reinforcement and served in the Medium Machine Gun Platoon of Headquarters Company.
