John Oglanby came from Cumbria and enlisted in the 1st Battalion, The Border Regiment during World War II, serving in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Arnhem.
He served in 24 Mortar Platoon, Support Company, during the Battle of Arnhem and was able to safely withdraw with the remnants of the British 1st Airborne Division to Allied lines south of the Rhine after the nine day battle.
