Private Stan Fowler

I served as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers from 1953 until 1956.

On 14 February 1956, I transferred to the Parachute Regiment.  At that point I was attached to HQ Coy 17 PARA where I did some basic parachute ground training. 

In May 1956, I was sent to No 1 Parachute Training School at RAF Abingdon.  After my parachute training I was presented with my Para Wings on the 2 June 1956.  On the course, apart from the balloon, we used Valetta, Hastings and Beverley aircraft, mainly dropping at Weston on the Green.

On returning to unit, I was posted to Support Coy 17 PARA as an Assault Pioneer, which was thought to be more in keeping with my previous role as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers.  As an Assualt Pioneer, we dealt with demolition and high explosive charges which were mainly of 'Gun Cotton' and '808 Plastic'.

My termination of engagement and discharge was 14 February 1960.  A further four years until 1964 was served in the Army Reserve.
