After graduating from Glasgow University with a civil engineering degree, Gordon Mitchell served in the Intelligence and Signals Section in Regimental Headquarters of 131 Parachute Field Regiment RE (TA). In 1965, Gordon took part in the Regiment's summer camp in the Radfan, Aden, heralded as the first operational action by reservists since the Second World War when 300 Parachute Squadron was attacked by rebel tribesmen on 12 April whilst working with 24 Field Squadron RE on the construction of the Dhala Road at Al-Milah, near the Yemen frontier.
