Mick Maguire enlisted into the 2nd/4th Battalion, The South Lancashire Regiment and had reached the rank of Sgt when it was turned over to airborne duties in 1943 to form part of the 5th Parachute Brigade within 6th Airborne Division.
He attended course 72, which ran at RAF Ringway from 12 to 23 July 1943, as part of a course cadre of 335 trainees. This was a standard course of eight descents with three from a balloon, including one at night, and five from aircraft. The instructors course notes record that Mick was a "good perfomer; a good NCO and section leader."
He served with the battalion's C Company during the Normandy campaign in 1944.
