Acting Sergeant Herbert Hough

Bert Hough was born in 1926 at Oldham, Lancashire, and served as a capstan operator prior to enlisting in the Army in July 1944; initially serving with the 4th Field Training Regiment, Royal Artillery.

In 1945 he transferred to 211 Airlanding  Light Battery, part of  the 53rd (Worcester Yeomanry) Airlanding Light Regiment. He served with the unit in Palestine as part of 6th Airborne Division, for approximately one year, before returning to the UK for a course at the Airborne Forces Depot.

After returning to service with 211 Battery it was redesignated as 96 Airborne Light Battery and the regiment redesignated as 33rd Airborne Light Regiment RA. Shortly after the redesignation, Bert was promoted to Lance Bombardier in April and Bombardier in October 1947, while on home duties.

He served with the unit in Germany, as part of the the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR), from February 1948 to September 1949 and during this time married  Ellen.

On returning to the UK he attended a Motor Transport course at Bordon and transferred to 49 Anti-Tank Regiment RA (redesignated as 49 Field Regiment RA). He was promoted to Acting Sergeant in 1951 shortly before deploying to Cyprus at Karaolos Camp, Famagusta.

He returned to the UK in 1952 and was transferred to the Regular Army Reserve on 19 September 1952.
