The Westland Sea King is a British built version of the American Sikorsky S-61 helicopter, built by Westland Helicopters.
The aircraft has Rolls-Royce Gnome engines and a fully computerised flight control system.
The Sea King was primarily designed for performing anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions but has been extensively used as a troop transport known as the Commando.
The type was heavily used in Northern Ireland, the Falkland’s and later campaigns including the Balkans and Iraq and Afghanistan operations.
The Sea King can be equipped with a variety of door mounted machine guns. In British service the Sea King is being steadily replaced by the Merlin helicopter.
