T17E1 Staghound Armoured Car

The T17E1 was a large 4 wheel armoured car produced by Chevrolet, in the United States, during the Second World War.

Although not selected for US use they were supplied to British and Commonwealth forces, to meet the requirement for a heavy armoured car, and received the service name Staghound.

The Staghounds design consisted of 2 rear mounted engines and an automatic transmission with two and four wheel drive options. Steering and suspension components were directly attached to the hull due to the rigid nature of the super structure.

Arriving too late to see active service in North Africa the type was used in Italy and North West Europe. 

Post war a number of Staghounds were transferred to Palestine where they saw service with  3^rd Kings Own Hussars on internal security duties as part of the 6th Airborne Division.
