L6 WOMBAT Recoilless Rifle

The L6 Weapon of Magnesium Battalion Anti Tank (WOMBAT) was a 120mm Recoilless Rifle introduced into service in the late 1960s to replace the earlier 106mm RCL.

It consisted of the L12A3 120mm BAT Gun on a lightweight carriage and was widely used by Airborne units.  It could be towed by or mounted on a Land Rover and was fully air transportable.

Equipped with a .50 Cal spotting rifle firing tracer rounds the WOMBAT could engage targets out to 2000m (2200 yds) typically firing a High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) Round at a rate of 4 rounds per minute.  It could defeat armour plate up to 400mm (16 inches) thick.

WOMBATs were embarked for use in the Falklands, but were not deployed in combat.  Shortly thereafter they were replaced by the MILAN Aniti Tank Missile as the primary Anti Tank weapon for Airborne Forces.
