Staff Sergeant Thomas W Mayes

Thomas William Mayes was the son of Arthur and Eleanor Mayes, of South Wigston, Leicestershire. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Staff Sergeant Mayes successfully completed his Glider Pilot training and was posted to G Squadron, 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

S/Sgt Mayes was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 24, and was given a field burial in a group of 8 graves in a garden near the junction of Benedendorpsweg and Kneppelhoutweg, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 22 August 1945.
