Sapper William Madden

William Madden was the son of James and Annie Madden, of Litherland, Liverpool. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sapper Madden successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 11 from 6 to 18 April 1942 and was posted to 1 Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers. He took part in Operation Torch (North Africa), Operation Husky (Sicily), Operation Slapstick (Italy) and Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Spr Madden was killed in action on 17 September 1944, aged 27, and was given a field burial in the garden of the Hoogstede House, Utrechtseweg, Oosterbeek and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 20 September 1945.
