Lance Corporal Bernard D Knapp

Bernard Dennis Knapp was the son of John and Florence Knapp, of Southampton and the husband of Gladys Knapp. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Knapp successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Knapp was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 22, and was given a field burial in a wooded area south of the main road, on the Hartenstein estate, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 31 October 1945.
