Horace Gordon Howell was the son of Howard Morley and Alice Howell and the husband of Vera Howell, of Hexthorpe, Yorkshire. He enlisted into the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Staff Sergeant Howell successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to F Squadron, 2nd Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
S/Sgt Howell was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 24, and was given a field burial in a group of graves near Oosterbeek station, he was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 13 August 1945.
