Driver Frederick W Hill

Frederick William Hill was the son of Frederick and Lilian Hill, of Long Eaton, Derbyshire and the husband of Marjorie Hill, of Long Eaton. He enlisted into the Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Driver Hill successfully completed his parachute training on course number at 43 at RAF Ringway from 20 December 1942 to 2 January 1943. His course report stated “Completed a very successful course, good show.” He was posted to 250 (Airborne) Light Composite Company, RASC, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Dvr Hill was killed, aged 27, when German troops opened fire with a machine gun on a number of captured RASC men whose defensive positions in some shops/buildings by the Eusebius church in the Arnhem town centre had been overrun on 21 September 1944, and was given a field burial in the Rhine Bridge area at Arnhem, he was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 29 October 1945.
