Harry Vasey, of New Bowburn, County Durham, enlisted into the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Vasey successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to C Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Vasey, batman to Lt P G Boville, the Officer Commanding 15 Platoon, is known to have been killed in action in company positions at Van Lennepweg, aged 28. He was originally buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery as an unknown British Soldier but recent research has identified his grave and a new headstone was dedicated to him at a ceremony in September 2016.
