Edward Hartley, son of J H and Cissie Hartley and husband of Vera A Hartley, of Cookridge, Leeds enlisted in The Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Sergeant Hartley successfully completed Glider training and was posted to Medium Machine Gun Platoon, S Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion The Border Regiment.
L/Sgt Hartley died on 20 September 1944, aged 31. His mortal remains were found in the back yard of Benedendorpsweg 168, near the Kerkpad, together with those of Pte Alfred Johnson, in August 1984. As he could not be identified at that time and as a Royal Engineer cap badge was found with him, he was reinterred in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery as an unkown soldier of the Royal Engineers on 12 April 1989. Ptes Johnson and Allen were buried there at the same time. L/Sgt Hartley was identified in 2004, and his grave was rededicated on 15 June 2006. His name also appears on Panel 4 of the Groesbeek Memorial where he was previously commemorated, but will be removed the next time the panel is replaced. (Battle of Arnhem, Roll of Honour. 5th Edition 2011).
