Frederick Stephenson, son of Frederick and Annie Stephenson, of Colne, Lancashire was a cotton mill labourer before enlisting in The Prince of Wales’s Volunteers and then volunteering for airborne forces.
Private Stephenson successfully completed Glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden, (Arnhem).
Pte Stephenson died on 25 September 1944. 'His body was found in the river Rhine near the Wageningen harbour on 31 May 1945 and was immediately buried in Wageningen General Cemetery'. (Battle of Arnhem, Roll of Honour. 5th Edition 2011)
