Lance Corporal George M Williams

George Maurice Williams, husband of Eileen Williams, of Swindon, Wiltshire, enlisted into The Manchester Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Williams successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to B Company' 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Williams (Extract from: Battle of Arnhem Roll of Honour, 5th revised edition, 2011) was lightly wounded in the Westerbouwing area on 21 September but stayed on duty. Later that day he was injured again, this time severely. His wounds were dressed, and he was given a shot of morphia. Subsequently the corporal was ordered back to Company HQ at No. 5 Veerweg, and he was then driven away by jeep to the battalion’s RAP (Regimental Aid Post) in Dennenoord House on Benedendorpsweg. He never arrived. According to MoD records he was buried one mile west of Oosterbeek. He is presumed to have died on 21 September 1944, aged 33. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
