Edward Emmanuel Hird, son of Emmanuel and Annie Hird, of Hanley, Staffordshire, enlisted into The Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Hird successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to C Company 1st (Airborne) Battalion, the Border Regiment.
He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Hird died of wounds on 23 September 1944, aged 21. He is known to have been severely wounded during actions on LZ Z (Landing Zone Z), near the Jonkershoeve farm at Renkum. It is reported that he was killed whilst being treated at a Casualty Clearing Station when it was hit by a mortar bomb.
He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Memorial at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
