Eric Pilling was born and lived in Liverpool, the son of Harry and Elsie Pilling, he enlisted into the General Service Corps was posted to The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Pilling successfully completed Glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion The Border Regiment.
He took part in the Battle of Arnhem, Operation Market Garden.
Pte Pilling died of wounds on 28 September 1944, aged 18, and was buried in Marienbosch Cemetery. He was later reinterred in Jonkerbos War Cemetery on 14 April 1947.
