John Abingdon Goodwin was the son of John Power and Marion Goodwin and husband of Dulce Goodwin, of South Brent, Devon. He commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Goodwin attended parachute course 39 at RAF Ringway on 27 November to 6 December 1942 and was posted to The 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion.
He later took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Lt Col Goodwin.
Lt Col Goodwin died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 35. He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
