Frederick George Matthieu son of Frederick G. and Florence Matthieu, of Leyton, Essex, enlisted into The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment.
He volunteered for airborne forces and served with 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. He was subsequently attached to HQ 1st Airborne Division, Defence Platoon and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.
He died on 25 September 1944, aged 22 years old, it is presumed he was Killed in Action. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial of the Missing at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
