Arthur Farquhar Murray was born in Glasgow and attended Banff Academy in Banff, Aberdeenshire before going to the University of Aberdeen to study medicine.
Whilst there he joined the University’s Officer Training Corps and was commission as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Gordon Highlanders Territorial Army in December 1934.
Lieutenant Murray was appointed on a short service commission in October 1937 and after training was posted to Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), training establishment at Crookham Camp, Aldershot in January 1938.
Lt Murray was posted to India in March 1938. Whilst serving with 149 Field Ambulance in June 1942 Captain Murray was reported as wounded and missing, he was shortly after confirmed as a Prisoner of War.
After repatriation to the UK in June 1945, Captain Murray immediately volunteered for airborne forces and undertook parachute course 177 which ran from 19 August to 7 September 1945 at RAF Ringway. He was posted to 244 Parachute Field Ambulance, where his brother Acting Major Frank Murray was serving.
By October 1945, both brothers were posted to 127 Parachute Filed Ambulance (PFA), with Captain A Murray being Second in Command to his brother Acting Lieutenant Colonel F Murray. At this time 127 PFA were in Palestine.
On 20 December 1945, The London Gazette published that Captain Murray MB (RAMC) had been Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service whilst a Prisoner of War.
Whilst in Palestine Capt Murray was posted to 222 PFA in January 1946.
Capt Murray returned to the UK in February 1946 on medical grounds and was retired with a disability and the honorary rank of Major in January 1947.
Athur Murray died in Australia in February 1970.
